Uku ndi kulira kwanga
Kulilira mchimwene wanga
Wapita nayo njala
atalephera kuhonga wachimanga

Koposadi ndamulira
poti ampingo
anakana kuyimbiea
chifukwa abusa
zam'manja sadapatsidwe

Dzana adalephera
wakumadzi ulendo
kumaphunziro
adalibe passport
Passport Officer ankafuna
naye atadyapo

Dzulo ntchito adamukana mkulu wangayu
Olemba amafuna ya Fanta
Osati degree yake

Inde, malume anga ndiwalira
Atsikira kuli chete, osathandizidwa
Dotolo atapotoza mlomo anati:
m'thumba sapisa ndi chibakela

Kuuza mtolankhani zakulira kwanga
Mopanda mankhalu anandilumira mano
“Opanda chipondamthengo kapena kuwasha
palibe nkhani apa”

Mayi Malawi, imvani kulira kwanga

A decade or two ago, Malawians who had relatives and friends abroad had few modes of communication at their disposal. If you wanted to communicate with loved ones abroad, you had to rush to the nearest post office and get an air form and jot your letter. Or else, you would buy some foolscap, put your pen to paper and when you were done, you would put it into an envelope with red and blue stripes, labelled: by air mail. Once sent, the letter would take a fortnight or so to reach its destination in Europe, America or the Indian subcontinent. To get a response, then, meant another fortnight of impatient expectation. For the Malawian in the diaspora, news from home was scarce. Apart from letters from relatives, it meant they were way behind events. Mwangwego: A Decade of a Rejected Script

April 7, 1997. A mark in Malawi’s history was hewn. What was destined to become Malawi’s unique style of writing, the Mwangwego Script was launched. The script, which was to be used for writing Malawian languages, was to be incorporated into the school syllabi. Its inventor, Nolence Mwangwego said he had come up with the script since although Malawi had many languages, the country still used the Roman alphabet to write languages like Chichewa, Lomwe, Tumbuka, Ngoni, Sena, Yao and others. A unique Malawian style of writing, in his view, was necessary for the nation’s identity. Memories from the other side of Mulanje Mountain

Kondwani Kamiyala At first glance, the Mulanje Mountain looks like a massive barren rock. You would think there is no life up there. One would seriously believe that life ends with the lush green tea plantations at the foot of the mountain. Coupled with the mythical tales of the ancestral spirits on the mountain, the belief that the mountain is lifeless is deeply rooted in the core of your heart. That is the mystery of Mount Mulanje. My perception of the mountain changed the day I hiked it. We never went as far as Sapitwa, the highest peak which is perched at 3002 metres above sea level. Hiking to Chambe Peak, 2,500 metres above sea level, nonetheless, is an experience on its own. Our hike began with a prayer at Likhubula Forest Office, which is the entry point to this massif.
